Speak Pal CEFR Assessment

What is CEFR Assessment?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language proficiency. It was established by the Council of Europe to provide a comprehensive and transparent system for learning, teaching, and assessing language skills across different languages.

The CEFR divides language proficiency into six levels, ranging from A1 for beginners to C2 for those who have mastered a language. These levels describe what a learner is supposed to be able to do in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. For example, at the A1 level, a person can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. At the C2 level, they can understand virtually everything heard or read and can express themselves spontaneously with high precision.

The CEFR framework is applicable for evaluating language proficiency across a diverse spectrum of 40 languages. This includes widely spoken global languages such as English, Spanish, and Chinese, as well as less commonly taught languages like Basque, Friulian, and Esperanto. The list also encompasses languages from different linguistic families, ranging from Romance languages like Portuguese and Italian to Slavic languages such as Russian and Ukrainian. Additionally, it covers languages with unique scripts like Arabic and Hebrew, and regional languages within Europe like Catalan and Galician. The framework’s versatility is further highlighted by its inclusion of languages from the Asian continent, like Japanese and Korean, and from the Nordic countries, such as Danish and Finnish. This wide-ranging applicability ensures that learners of languages as varied as Armenian, Estonian, and Georgian, among others, can have their skills assessed against the same standardized levels of proficiency.

Navigating Language Proficiency - Learn English: IELTS, TOEFL, and CEFR Comparisons

The CEFR is a widely recognized framework that describes language proficiency levels. It ranges from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). On the other hand, the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) assess English proficiency for academic and general purposes.

1. IELTS and CEFR Comparison:

   - If your organization requires an IELTS score of 5.5–6.5, this corresponds to CEFR level B2.
   - IELTS scores of 7–8 align with CEFR level C1, which is widely accepted for university admissions in English-speaking countries.

2.Mapping TOEFL iBT Scores to CEFR Levels:

   - TOEFL iBT scores correspond to CEFR levels based on research and educator feedback.
   - For instance, a TOEFL score of 100-110 roughly corresponds to CEFR level C1 (advanced proficiency).

3.TOEFL iBT and IELTS Comparison:

   - TOEFL iBT scores align with IELTS Academic overall band scores.
   - TOEFL iBT Score 118 ≈ IELTS Band 9
   - TOEFL iBT Score 79 ≈ IELTS Band 6.5
   - These comparisons help institutions set score requirements for admissions.
